Bank transforms empty shell into school library

Ceilings were installed in a space allocated by the school for a library, walls were repaired and plastered and finally given a fresh coat of paint and library-related drawings etched on the wall by the artist.

BANK employees from the South Coast area volunteered their time to transform an empty shell into an exciting library space for the pupils of Sesifikile Primary School recently.

Ceilings were installed in a space allocated by the school for a library, walls were repaired and plastered and finally given a fresh coat of paint and library-related drawings etched on the wall by the artist.

For the last two years Standard Bank has been establishing libraries in primary schools across South Africa. This year, there are three libraries planned for the KZN region, and Sesifikile Primary School near Amanzimtoti was the second one completed in KZN this year. RAK Events, the implementing partner for the Standard Bank Library project, got to work in the library a week prior to the event.

The employees painted the unique ‘tetris’ shelf in bright colours, drawings which were filled in by the artist, made creative tyre furniture and ottomans from pallet wood for the pupils to sit on, hung blinds on the windows and installed a worktop for the seniors.

A junior phase section was created which included a cosy reading corner for the youngsters. A section was also created for the seniors. The new shelving, chairs and carpets were brought into the library.

Most importantly, the fresh and colourful new books were finally sorted and placed on the shelves. The space was transformed from a dull empty shell in to a vibrant library that excited and inspired both teachers and pupils.

All efforts were invested into this project in the hope that more children will grow an interest in and have access to books, setting them on a path of growing their knowledge through reading.
