Teen successfully wrestles with would-be Beach Road hijackers

When we stopped outside a block of flats, two armed men got out of the vehicle and one of them went to the driver’s door.

An Amanzimtoti teen was fortunate to escape with minor injuries after he fought off hijackers in Beach Road on Sunday night, 2 September.

Joshua Meyer (20) was travelling with his friend Lauren Wood (29) in her car along Beach Road at about 11pm and they didn’t notice a vehicle following them. “When we stopped outside a block of flats, two armed men got out of the vehicle and one of them went to the driver’s door,” he said.

Instinct kicked in and Joshua jumped out and began tussling with the hijacker. In the struggle, he dropped his backpack and the hijacker’s accomplice picked it up. When they broke apart, the accomplice grabbed his friend and they jumped into their vehicle and sped off.

Apart from some scratches on his arm, Joshua realised he was lucky to escape serious harm. “A saving grace was watching over me on Sunday night. I now realise it was not the cleverest idea but it was either my friend or me, and I decided it should rather be me.”
