A look back at what made the news in the first week of September 1993
ONE of the top 10 diving spots in the world, the Aliwal Shoal near Umkomaas, may be in jeopardy due to unscrupulous divers, fishermen and aquarists.
Conservationists and divers have expressed fear at the ‘raping’ of the 7km long shoal. Apparently some people are fishing with as many as eight rods at a time and some divers spear even tame or small fish.
A TOTI resident was killed last week when he was hit by an emergency vehicle.
Tony Shepherd, former employee of Toti Borough, died instantly when he was knocked over as he crossed Kingsway in central Toti.
An emergency vehicle from the Amanzimtoti Fire Department was responding to an emergency medical call at Nedbank at about 11am last Thursday when it was involved in the accident.
VARIOUS environmental and conservation organisations are spearheading a massive beach clean-up along the Natal coastline.
Support from the various clubs and groups in the community would be greatly appreciated.
ABOUT 60% of the economically active population in region 36 Southern Natal is unemployed.
Region 36 stretches from the Umkomaas River to the Umtamvuna River and inland to Harding and Highflats.
So said John Tulleken, chairman of the Southern Natal Regional Development Association at its annual meeting on 27 August.
THE Natal Parks Board reminds anglers that the shad season will close from 1 September until 1 December.
“The closed season coincides with the shad breeding season during which the fish spawn in Natal waters,” said Lex Fearnhead, Natal Parks Board chief conservator for the coast.
