Umkomaas man who raped his own mother jailed for 22 years

A man who raped his own mother was sentenced to 22 years’ imprisonment, thanks to the diligent work of a Umlazi Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) officer.

W/O Sfiso Mngonyama secured the conviction after the man raped his own mother in December 2015 in the Umkomaas area. He managed to link the same suspect to another rape through DNA.

In July, the victim was walking on a pathway at night in Umkomaas, when she was grabbed and raped by an unknown man and robbed of her cellphone. W/O Mngonyama linked the DNA to the same accused who had raped his mother two years before.

The accused was immediately charged and successfully convicted on both cases. For rape count one, the accused was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment. On the second count of robbery, he was sentenced to an additional seven years’ imprisonment. For the third count of rape, he was sentenced to be imprisoned for 15 years. Count one and two will run concurrently and count three will run on its own.

W/O Mngonyama was praised as an asset to Umlazi and eThekwini Outer South police stations when investigating rape and sexual offences. “I am proud of the professional commitment by W/O Mngonyama at Umlazi FCS, who ensured the accused for both rape cases was put behind bars for a long time,” said Umlazi FCS commander, Lt Col Ntombifuthi Mkhwanazi.

“His hard work in linking the DNA, charging and convicting the suspect in both cases was excellent. His thorough investigation and professionalism has attained an excellent conviction.”
