A policeman was convicted of attempting to defeat or obstruct the course of justice in Amanzimtoti Magistrates Court on 6 August, after he lost his service firearm but reported it stolen in a supposed robbery.
Absolom Duma (39), a policeman based at Isipingo SAPS, was sentenced to an effective three years behind bars for losing his firearm. During his sentencing, the magistrate said Duma intentionally defeated or obstructed the course of justice by making a sworn statement and opening a docket for robbery with aggravating circumstances regarding the loss of his state-issued firearm.
On 1 October 2013 Duma said he was robbed of his firearm, magazine and 15 cartridges, as well as bank cards and R8,000 in cash after his vehicle broke down on the side of the road at about 10pm. Both his cellphones were not stolen in the robbery.
He opened a case of robbery at Isipingo SAPS the next day. However, an informant handed in all the items, minus the cash, to the police which led to his undoing.
