Death of Lawrence Hass

He lived in Doonside with his family until he married Patsy in February 1967.

Lawrence Hass, known as ‘Caps’ to his many friends, died on Sunday, 22 July.

Lawrence was the youngest of Polly and Mannie Hass’ four children. His older sisters were Queenie, Pam and Joan, who is the last surviving sibling. Lawrence was 77-years-old.

He lived in Doonside with his family until he married Patsy in February 1967. They have two children – Samantha and Raymond.

“In 1993 Lawrence was offered a job in Australia and left South Africa that July. He and his family enjoyed the Australian lifestyle and lived there for 25 years,” said his sister Joan.

He returned to SA once a year and stayed with Joan in Amanzimtoti. His last visit was in February.

“Lawrence had a very active life. He was a lifesaver for many years and completed a number of Comrades Marathons. He enjoyed being in the water and was the Southern open surfing champion from 1961 to 1965 and a triathlon open champion for over 45-year-olds in 1988.

In 1989 he won gold in an Iron Man competition for over 40-year-olds and was selected to represent SA at two world championships in 1991 and 1992 in Palm Springs, California and Frankfurt, Germany,” said Joan.

His family was very proud of his achievements.

Lawrence will be missed by his wife, children and three grandchildren in Australia, and his sister Joan and many friends still in Amanzimtoti.
