Men arrested after shootout with police

While the men were busy stripping the vehicle, they were confronted by the police and there was an exchange of gunfire.

Two men were wounded by police and two arrested after breaking into a vehicle at the Isipingo SAPS pound on Thursday, 26 July.

Isipingo SAPS members, together with K9 unit team, were conducting crime prevention duties in the area when they noticed three men jumping the fence at the pound and opening a white Audi vehicle at about 9.30pm.

While the men were busy stripping the vehicle, they were confronted by the police and there was an exchange of gunfire where two of them were wounded. The police managed to catch the third man while he attempted to flee the scene and he was arrested.

The team continued with their observation and investigations in the area and found a fourth suspect sitting in a Toyota Quantum minibus waiting for his friends to return with the stolen items and he was arrested.

The injured suspects were taken to hospital for medical attention where they are under police guard. The suspects, aged between 24 and 26, appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 30 July for attempted theft and attempted murder.
