Shark net concern for whale off Doonside unfounded
A concerned caller reported to the Sun that a whale, which seemed to be acting out back and forth, was in line with two shark net buoys, which gave the impression that it was trapped in the nets.
AN ocean-gazer was filled with concern as he watched a whale seemingly acting out, fearing it may have been caught up in the shark nets off Doonside at about noon on Tuesday, 24 July.
KZN Sharks Board’s Mike Anderson-Reade confirmed that there are no shark nets in place along the Upper South Coast, due to sardine shoals which are still being netted, and that only the buoys remain in the water.

“We also receive many calls from concerned community members reporting that there are sea creatures caught in and towing along a buoy, only to find that it’s no more than a spear fisherman,” explained Anderson-Reade.
