Durban shark nets lifted ahead of sardine run

The sardine run is a highlight of the winter season along the KZNcoastline

DURBAN beaches have been temporarily closed due to the removal of the shark nets to allow for the arrival of the annual sardine run.

Durban beach users are warned that bathing anywhere along the South and Central beaches has been temporarily prohibited.

The closure is effective immediately and beaches will only be re-opened once the sardine run has passed through.

The sardine run is a highlight of the winter season along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline. The spectacle of millions of sardines travelling en masse in shoals and chased by marine predators, attracts numerous tourists and fishermen to the region.
