Homeowner’s reward leads to housebreaker’s arrest

A reward offered by the owner of the property soon paid dividends.

A housebreaker was nabbed by vigilant Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) officers on Thursday, 14 June after he broke into a Doonheights premises. CCPO committee member, George Snodey said the premises was broken into in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“The CCPO was summoned to the premises and after viewing the CCTV footage, it was shared with the CCPO WhatsApp group. Informers were shown the footage and a name was soon attached to the suspect,” he said.

A reward offered by the owner of the property soon paid dividends, when CCPO crewman Mbambo Nhlanhla was approached by someone near the Toti station the next morning, who informed him of the suspect’s whereabouts.

He approached the suspect who was wearing the same clothing and shoes that was clearly visible in the video. With help from CCPO crewman Hendrik Nxumalo and CCPO and Blue Security patrol officer, Mbuyiselo ‘Triple M’ Mdunjane, the suspect, who put up a fight, was apprehended.

“When SAPS and ET Rapid Response arrived, the suspect was taken to Isipingo to point out where some of the stolen items were sold. Although none of the items were there, SAPS are confident it will be found.

“The suspect said he was in prison in the Kokstad C Max until about a year ago when he was released. For those of you who don’t know, this prison is where all the really serious and dangerous criminals are housed. We are not sure how many of these guys are lurking around our area but we need to all bond together in this fight against crime and make the CCPO our own little army,” said Snodey.
