Thanks to the altruism of donors, thousands of people are saved annually across the globe through organ and tissue donations. These vital transplants give families and loved ones a second chance at living fulfilled lives for many years.

Some facts about organ donation from the Organ Donor Foundation of South Africa (ODF):

  • To become an organ donor, register on the ODF website or call the toll free number, 0800-22-66-11.
  • Being an organ donor means you can save up to seven lives by donating your heart, liver and pancreas and kidneys and up to 50 people by donating your corneas, skin, bone, tendons and heart valves.
  • There are about 4,300 South Africans waiting for organ and cornea transplants.
  • In 2016 in SA there were 512 organ and cornea transplants.
