The man’s body was found near Mehlo Store, next to the clinic gate. Police believe a group of men acting under the banner of a community forum had beaten the man from about noon until 6.30pm. They allegedly accused him of stealing and chased and assaulted him for several hours, taking him around the township while trying to recover the stolen property.

Investigating officer, Constable Cele arrested eight men in connection with the murder. Bail was denied when they appeared in court on Friday, 1 June. Another man was arrested on the same day.

Umkomaas SAPS station commander Lt Col Nene warned the community not to take the law into their own hands. He said vigilantism will not be tolerated. “As citizens, if a crime is committed, it is responsibility of every person to contact the police for assistance so that the matter can be investigated,” he said.
