KwaMakhutha burglars’ reign of terror halted as police swoop

During the operation, an arrest was also made for the KwaMakhutha murder of the deputy principal at Manyuswa Primary School in Umlazi.

Six wanted suspects found themselves behind bars when the eThekwini outer south cluster and provincial trio task teams made a swoop in the KwaMakhutha area on Friday morning, 25 May.

Colonel Thembeka Mbhele of the SAPS KZN media centre said the men were arrested for a number of house robberies in KwaMakhutha. “The group reigned with terror when committing house robberies in KwaMakhuta and surrounding areas. Some victims were also murdered,” he said. “These arrested criminals aged between 21 and 31-years-old also targeted police members’ homes and regularly engaged in shoot-outs.”

During the operation, an arrest was also made for the KwaMakhutha murder of Skhumbuso Maluleka (29), the deputy principal at Manyuswa Primary School in Umlazi. He was murdered during a house robbery on 9 May, and his Toyota Corolla was stolen. The vehicle was recovered at a mechanic in Umbumbulu during the operation.

A 9mm firearm, 34 live rounds, laptops, 20 cellphones, high-tech gadgets and household appliances which were taken in the various house robberies were also recovered. The men have been linked to 19 cases of house robberies. All of them appeared in the Nsimbini Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 28 May.
