Don’t forget to renew your firearm license

Where a firearm’s licence has expired and it is voluntarily surrendered, the owner will not be prosecuted

FIREARM owners are reminded that they have to apply for a renewal of their licenses at least 90 days before the expiry of the current license.

Brighton Beach police cited Section 24 of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act 60 of 2000), which mandates the 90 day minimum for an application to be made before the current license expires.

Applications must be made to the registrar for renewal. Should an application be lodged in less than 90 days, a reason for the late application must be provided.

Licences for which a renewal application has been lodged, will remain valid until the application has been decided upon.  This only applies to individuals who possess licences issued under the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act 60 of 2000).

In the case where a person wants to renew or apply for a licence, but the validity of the license has already expired, they are no longer in lawful possession of the firearm and that firearm must be surrendered to the nearest police station.

Where a firearm’s licence has expired and it is voluntarily surrendered, the owner will not be prosecuted.
