Amanzimtoti robber shot dead in Umlazi

It was discovered the vehicle was stolen during a house robbery in Long Acres Road.

A house robbery in Amanzimtoti ended badly for one of the robbers who was shot dead by police in Umlazi on Friday night, 18 May.

Police were conducting an operation aimed at preventing serious and violent crimes in Umlazi when shots were fired at them by three occupants of a Toyota Corolla at about 7.30pm.

Police returned fire, fatally wounding one of the men and the other two fled on foot. Police officers were not injured during the exchange of gunfire. They recovered two pistols with their serial numbers filed off, ammunition and suspected stolen property.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the vehicle was stolen during a house robbery in Long Acres Road about an hour earlier. It is alleged the three men entered the house and robbed the owners of their valuables at gunpoint and fled in the victims’ vehicle. A case of house robbery was opened at Amanzimtoti police station.

KZN acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the police for removing unlicensed firearms from the hands of criminals and stated that these firearms will be subjected for ballistic testing to ascertain whether they were used in any other crimes in the country. “We are glad that police officers escaped the shooting unscathed. We are still searching for the suspects who fled and we are working tirelessly to ensure that they are apprehended and prosecuted,” he said.
