Thousands attend 53rd tartan showcase

The weather always has a say with the Gathering’s attendance, so this year’s beautiful weather was a fantastic start.

From all accounts Amanzimtoti Lions Club can pat itself on the back for another hugely successful Highland Gathering.

Estimates of between 8,000 and 10,000 visitors flocked to the 53rd annual event of the second largest gathering of pipe bands outside Scotland, held at Amanzimtoti Sports Centre on Saturday, 28 April.

“It was a slow start in the morning but the crowds built up nicely during the day,” said Amanzimtoti Lions PRO, Carol Botha. “The weather always has a say with the Gathering’s attendance, so this year’s beautiful weather was a fantastic start. When it’s nice and sunny, people come out in their droves. The stalls were all busy, which was good to see.”

“Thanks to everyone who helped to make the 53rd Gathering such a success,” said Botha. “Thanks to the school children and Tablers for manning the gates, and the moms and everyone who helped man the cooldrink stations. Special thanks to all the Lions from clubs all across KZN who pitched in to help us with the event.
Without everyone’s help, we would not be able to put on such an event. It was fantastic. See you all next year.”
