RECIPE: Isgwaqane (maize meal and sugar beans)

Recipe tried and tested by Pamela Mkhungo.

Isgwaqane is a scrumptious, easy to make traditional South African meal, made using simple ingredients like beans and maize meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of sugar beans
  • 3 cups of white maize meal
  • 3 teaspoons of vegetable oil
  • 3 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch black pepper
  • 1 Litre water

 Directions

  1. In a large saucepan place beans, a pinch of salt and 1 jug of water. Let it boil for 1 hour.
  2. Once the beans start to get tender, add 3 cups of maize meal and stir using a wooden spoon, until the maize meal and beans are nicely blended.
  3. Leave for 45 minutes until the maize meal is tender and well cooked.
  4. And 3 teaspoons of oil and cook for another 10 minutes.
  5. A perfect accompaniment to stews and potjies.
