Love is in the air for Amanzimtoti bird photo contest

A monthly winner will be chosen whose photo will be published in the Sun.

IN the week of Valentine’s Day, it’s a good time to consider snapping away at some loved-up birds.

This reminder is posted by Sapphire Coast Tourism which, together with Birdlife Port Natal and South Coast Sun, is running a monthly birding competition from February to April.

This month’s theme is fittingly ‘love is in the air’. The tourism team hopes to receive photos of a couple of love birds, but reminds entrants that their entries cannot be of caged or pet birds.

The competition aims to encourage both locals and holidaymakers to explore the full extent of the Sapphire Coast in search of its birdlife and thus extend their knowledge of the area.

A monthly winner will be chosen whose photo will be published in the Sun. Submit your photo entries via the SCT Facebook Photo Competition page  and e-mail a high resolution image to sctphotocomp@gmail.com and bsm1@mweb.co.za.

Participants must mention the exact location, date, type of bird spotted, their camera details, as well as a short description of how and where they captured the image.

Photos must have been taken recently in the Sapphire Coast area, which stretches from the eZimbogintwini River north of Athlone Park, Amanzimtoti to the Mahlongwa River, south of Crocworld to Clansthal, including Umbogintwini, Amanzimtoti, KwaMakhutha, Ezimbokodweni, Folweni, Magabeni, Adams Mission, Umbumbulu, Doonside, Kingsburgh, St Winifreds, Winklespruit, Illovo Beach, Karridene, Lovu, Umgababa, Mnini, Umkomaas, Widenham and Clansthal.

Photos must be 72dpi in resolution and have a width of 25cm for landscape photos, or such height if a portrait shape.

To dovetail with the Sapphire Coast Birding Challenge, Adam encourages birders to go to www.birdlasser.com/challenges/sapphirecoast2018/overview to help build the database of locally sighted birds.

Download the Birdlasser app on your phone to take part in the challenge.
