Car crashes into wall in Lower Illovo ‘to avoid speeding cars’

The motorist had apparently swerved out of the way to avoid a head-on collision

VEMA Paramedics responded to a serious car crash at about 8.50pm last night (Sunday, 25 March) on Sugar Road, off the R603 at Lower Illovo.

They found a single car had collided into a wall, coming to rest on a grass area. Medics and fire department officials assessed the patient, who was found to have sustained spinal injuries. They used specialised hydraulic rescue equipment to free the man from the wreckage of his car.

He was extricated, immobilised and taken to a local hospital for further care and evaluation. Sources at the scene said there were two vehicles racing up the road when he was coming down. The motorist had apparently swerved out of the way to avoid a head-on collision with the two vehicles, and subsequently collided with the wall.

VEMA extended thanks to Netcare911 and eThekwini Fire and Emergency Services, as well as bystanders at the scene who assisted.

A VEMA spokesman emphasised to those involved in or who witness a collision to call the relevant emergency services to assist. “We strongly advise against any form of removal out of a wreckage or for patients to walk around at the scene of a crash, until a qualified medical practitioner can assess the patient.”
