Burglar shoots Amanzimtoti home owner in stomach

The man heard a gun being cocked and was shot in the stomach by one of the intruders while attempting to escape from the room.

An Amanzimtoti resident was shot in the stomach by intruders who attempted to enter his home through a spare room window on Sunday, 25 March at around 3am.

The resident of John Craven Place was woken by suspicious noises.

When he approached the spare room window to inspect it, the intruders fired a shot at him before fleeing.

“On Sunday morning suspects climbed over the fence to get into the John Craven Road yard,” said Blue Security spokesman, Andreas Mathios. “They forced open the aluminium window and when the man was awoken and approached the window, the suspects fired a shot, which struck the home owner in his stomach.”

“I woke up and heard banging on my door,” said the home owner, who asked to remain anonymous. “I didn’t open it immediately, but let out my dog who was growling, to check what was going on. I then noticed two intruders attempting to enter through a spare room window. I didn’t notice there were two others waiting nearby.”

The home owner proceeded to check the room into which they were trying to gain entry. He heard a gun being cocked and was shot in the stomach by one of the intruders while he ran from the room.

The man said the bullet entered and then exited his body. He called the Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO), which alerted the police and other parties.

ER24 arrived and transported the man to hospital, while Amanzimtoti SAPS combed the scene.

The resident warned others against investigating noises or suspicions about intruders on their premises, especially at night. “I recommend hitting your panic button or calling the police,” he said. “These guys won’t hesitate to open fire if need be.”

Report suspicious activity to the police by calling 10111 and mention ‘robbery in progress’ if the intruder is entering your home.
