LOCAL beaches have received clean-up attention from the pupils and teachers of the town’s primary schools over the last week.
In yet another initiative inspired by Clean Surf Project’s visit to schools, the team reaped the reward of spreading awareness about the state of the world’s beaches, due to littering.
Athlone Park Primary School tackled Winklespruit Beach on Wednesday, 14 March and Umdoni Primary together with the Warnadoone Surf Lifesaving Club nippers rolled up their sleeves to get stuck in at Warner Beach on Saturday, 17 March.

“We thank all schools for helping us fight this major task,” said CSP’s Denzil van der Westhuizen. “I’m sure everyone learnt so much by removing a lot of the smaller, broken down plastics that pose a great threat to our ocean life, as well as future generations.”
After working up a sweat while ridding the local stretch of beach of harmful litter, pupils took up the chance to cool off in the ocean.
Denzil thanked Sapphire Coast Tourism chairman, Romy Wenzel for providing gazebos and Winklespruit lifesavers Mfana, Vusi and Dean for keeping a watchful eye on children involved in the Winklespruit clean-up.
“Thumbs-up to Clean Surf Project, Athlone Park Primary School and Umdoni Primary School for getting involved by cleaning our beaches along the Sapphire Coast,” said Romy. “What a great initiative. Well done to all boys, girls, teachers and the Clean Surf Project team.”
