‘Name and shame’ threat to Nyati Road illegal dumpers

The exercise will also extend to the entire Amanzimtoti area.

Following continued complaints regarding conditions and illegal dumping at the Nyati Road dump site and surrounds in Athlone Park, various municipal departments have met to seek a solution.

“Not only is illegal dumping unacceptable but the reality is the Sasol gas pipeline which runs in the area comes under constant threat when fires are lit to strip copper or get rid of waste,” said ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge.

“The dumping appears to be of mixed matter, with clear evidence of industrial waste which is conveniently dumped within the suburban area. The exercise will, however not remain contained to the Nyati Road area but will also extend to the entire Amanzimtoti area.”

Residents are requested to report illegal dumping via email to kacey.naicker@durban.gov.za, which has to be accompanied by or meet the following criteria:

1. Day, date, time and location.

2. Photographic evidence to substantiate the report.

3. Detail of perpetrator, including registration numbers or known address or identity.

4. Be prepared to supply an affidavit.

5. Be prepared to testify at a hearing or in court should the need arise.

“This serves as a clear public warning to refrain from illegal dumping as authorities will eventually find you. They will enforce the law to its full extent and we will name and shame you on every conceivable platform, so everyone is aware of your identity,” said Cllr Beetge.
