Contribute to Upper South Coast gill netters’ petrol fund

They have been responsible for countless other busts in the greater Amanzimtoti area over the years, often at their own cost.

Amanzimtoti conservationists can help fight illegal netters by contributing to a petrol fund for the patrol of local rivers.

“To the people who have contributed to our petrol fund so we can continue to utilise Emil Pirzenthal’s rubber duck in our efforts to keep the gill nets out of our rivers, thank you and it is much appreciated,” said river guardian George Snodey.

Recently George received a call from a local resident who saw nets being positioned in the river. They went to investigate and removed one net. “It wasn’t as long as they normally are, about 30m at the most but still able to cause terrible carnage in the river.” The net was removed for destruction.

The guardians have since done six investigative runs where no nets were found. “It’s nice to see our continuous pressure on these guys seems to be paying off. Previously it was impossible to go out twice and not find a net or four,” said Snodey.
