Birds of a feather to flock together at Sapphire Coast birding challenge
Participating in this challenge will promise not only lots of fun but will make a valuable contribution to conservation initiatives in the Sapphire Coast region.
BIRD enthusiasts who are either visitors to or residents of the KZN South Coast are invited to take part in the Sapphire Coast Bird Challenge running throughout this year.
All participants will be entered into lucky draws where amazing birding books and more are up for grabs.
“The aim of this challenge is to see who can see the most bird species in this region,” said bird enthusiast Adam Cruikshank. “The area stretches from the Mbokodweni River in the north, to the Mpambanyoni River in the south, about 9km inland, and 1.5km into the ocean.”
Organisers assured participants that this challenge promises not only lots of fun but will make a valuable contribution to conservation initiatives in the Sapphire Coast area.
“There is no prize for who sees the most birds, this will only give that birder bragging rights for the year,” explained Adam. “The prizes will be lucky draws for those who register and enter bird sightings during the year. We will have more than one prize to give away throughout the duration that the challenge runs.”
Adam explained that this acts as an incentive to motivate birders to participate and log in bird sightings.
“It also levels out the playing field and allows less experienced people with bird sightings to participate,” he said. “All that they need is to be sure of the bird that they see and log it, if they are not sure rather not log it.”
Those interested are required to download the Birdlasser application. This is a free application available on both Android and Apple platforms which contestants will use to log on birds that they have seen.

Adam thanked Henk Nel and the BirdLasser team for putting together the challenge.
“Everyone that participates between now and the end of March will go into the first draw and stand a chance to win some amazing birding books, compliments of Bargain Books SA,” he explained.
