Ward 97 councillor Andre Beetge urges the public to heed the call to register their intention to vote in the 2019 national government elections, at the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) first registration weekend on 10 and 11 March.

“We alert the public about the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) conducting its first registration weekend for the 2019 National Elections during the weekend of 10 and 11 March,” he said.

“Many will recall the chaos that prevailed during the past municipal elections, with the uncertainty of address capturing and individuals mysteriously disappearing from voter rolls where they had been registered for years.”

With this in mind, voters should know that where an eligible voter’s address does not reflect on the national voters roll, they risk the possibility of being removed, irrespective of whether they were previously registered, reflected, voted or still remain resident at the same address.

What should prospective 2019 voters do?

Produce their valid barcoded South African identity document (ID) or Smart ID card to the IEC at the closest voting station between 8am and 5pm during the registration weekend of Saturday and Sunday, 10 and 11 March to either check your details are already recorded, or to supply the required details to ensure it is captured and you are eligible to vote in 2019.

All South African citizens 16 years or older can register if they are in possession of either the green barcoded ID or new Smart ID card. For more information, call Cllr Beetge on 082-718-8137.
