Midmar Mile swimmer raise R3,000 for CHOC

With some serious training under his belt, he shaved eight minutes off his time to finish in 32.28.

A young Amanzimtoti swimmer dedicated his Midmar Mile swim to raising funds for children with cancer.

Amanzimtoti High School grade 8 pupil, Jason Maree (13) got family and friends to sponsor his swim and managed to raised a whopping R3,000 for the Childhood Cancer Foundation SA (CHOC) last month.

With only four months of training, Jason swam the Midmar Mile for the first time last year in 40.19 minutes. This year, with some serious training under his belt, he shaved eight minutes off his time to finish in 32.28, a huge achievement. He finished 23rd out of 214 boys in the 13-years-and-under category.

“I trained specifically for this year’s Midmar Mile by swimming 67 laps in the pool, which equates to a mile,” said the strong swimmer, who is a member of Aqua Swimming Club. “On the day the water was dark and cold, and it started to get choppy but I handled it well. My training helped me a lot.”

Jason also plays hockey, waterpolo, surfs, bodyboards and is a nipper at the Winklespruit Lifesaving Club. “I only started swimming competitively last year. I always wanted to swim but there wasn’t a club I could join. I want to do the Midmar Mile every year and I will continue to raise funds, most probably for CHOC again,” he said.
