No stretch for netball star to make two KZN teams

Amanzimtoti High School is continuing its tradition of producing top-notch netball players.

Caroline Richter is following in her sister Elizabeth’s footsteps by becoming a regular fixture in KZN teams. Elizabeth, who was a sports teacher at the school as well, was twice selected for the SA team.

Caroline has made the cut for both the KZN U17 and U19 teams this year. She has been selected to do honours for her province since competing in the U13 age group. The 17-year-old has also made the SA U16 team. “I was surprised to also make the KZN U19 women’s side,” said the grade 11 pupil. “Unfortunately I am not eligible for national colours this year – the next time I can go for trials is for the women’s team.”

Last year Caroline, who is a goal shooter, was in action for her country when the team took on Australia and New Zealand in Johannesburg. “We played six and seven-a-side, and tied with New Zealand but lost to Australia.”

She has decided to solely focus on netball. “I previously played waterpolo but I stopped it after I got injured. I have to look after myself.” Caroline is currently injured with shin splints but hopes to be fighting-fit soon, to start training with her KZN teammates.

“We train in Durban North every Sunday – two hours with the U17s and then two hours with the U19s, so for me it’s four straight hours. But it’s not too much, I can handle it.”

Caroline and her teammates are focusing on two upcoming inter-provincial tournaments – one during the April school holidays and another from 29 April to 4 March. “Both our teams are looking good for the inter-provincials. Last year our U16 team finished second and our U15s third, so I’m sure we will do well again this year,” said Caroline.
