New art president takes USCAA into digital age

People are welcome to visit our Facebook page ‘Upper South Coast Art Association’.

New president of the Upper South Coast Art Association (USCAA), Jean Taylor (68) hopes to move the club into the digital era.

Jean, who was a member of USCAA 10 years ago, before leaving and re-joining about three years ago, was elected to lead the club late last year. “I offered to be the refreshment co-ordinator last year. When then-president Patricia McCann decided to step down, I was plan B,” she said.

Jean resides in Widenham and the club used to meet in the evenings, which made the drive home unsafe, so she left but rejoined when their monthly meetings were changed to a Saturday afternoon.

Over the years she has covered all the art media from watercolours, pastels, oils, silk painting, pencil and crayon to even murals at the Hospice Shop in Scottburgh. “I have done a lot of underwater scenes. I am not a diver but I have always loved aquariums and Jacques Cousteau. I enjoy painting animals from my own wildlife photos taken when I visit nature reserves.” Jean also has an extensive repertoire of flower and butterfly paintings and drawings.

She was born in Bristol and moved to Johannesburg in 1981 before making the South Coast her home about 20 years ago. “I took art at school and did night classes but I only began to take it seriously in my 40s when my children were older.” Jean is married to Barry and they have two children – Zoe and Paul – and five grandchildren.

“USCAA is now on Facebook. It is the way for us to go forward in this day and age. People are welcome to visit our Facebook page ‘Upper South Coast Art Association’, where we feature some of our 80 members and their work, most of which is up for sale.”
