With cellphone technology now making it possible to track the movements of a cellphone user, Amanzimtoti’s Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) wants to gauge its members’ keenness to have a cellphone app which, at the push of a panic button, would do the following:
- Link you directly with the CCPO’s control centre, informing them of your location, even if you can’t speak;
- In an emergency, notify CCPO patrols, directing them to your location for assistance;
- Have additional non-emergency features;
- Provide alerts such as robberies or suspicious behaviour;
- Request a ‘follow me’ if you require an escort home if you feel unsafe;
- Links to other essential numbers such as fire department and paramedics.
There would be a nominal fee per month, still to be determined, for members to have access to this cellphone app.
