BREAKING NEWS: Woman struck by train at Winklespruit

She sustained multiple injuries, including to her neck, back and right leg.

A young woman was hit by a train in Winklespruit on Wednesday, 14 February at about 8.30am today.

ER24 paramedic Leo Fourie said the woman, who is 18 or 19-years-old, was walking on the side of the tracks about 50m north of the pedestrian bridge opposite the Winklespruit Road Traffic Inspectorate offices, when she was clipped by the passing train.

“I spoke to the train driver, who said he hooted and applied brakes when he spotted her. It looked like she was moving out of the way but she carried on walking along the tracks when the train clipped her. She was flung into a small riverine.”

She sustained multiple injuries, including to her neck, back and right leg. She was stabilised at the scene by an ER24 paramedic and Voluntary Emergency Medical Assistance (VEMA) paramedic, before being transported in a stable condition to Prince Mshiyeni Hospital.
