Kingsway’s all-rounder shines on the cricket pitch

A young Kingsway High School cricketer has started his high school career in the best possible way after he scored 188 runs not out against Port Shepstone on Saturday, 3 February.

Jayden Venter (13), an all-rounder who also opens the bowler and captains his U14A side, helped Kingsway score 274/8 in their 35 overs. They then bowled the opposition out for a paltry 110 runs, leaving them 164 run victors in the season opener.

“I was pleased with myself,” said Jayden on his mammoth knock. “I just tried to keep my head and not listen to the sledging going on around me. I focused on my game plan.” Sledging is when the opposition fielders verbally abuse the batsman to try and undermine his concentration. However, their taunts fell on deaf ears and Jayden proved he has immense powers of concentration.

Surprisingly this is only his second hundred – he scored his first as vice-captain of Amanzimtoti Primary School in grade 6. “Port Shepstone’s bowlers bowled decent line and length and with some pace,” said the grade 8 pupil, which alludes to the young batsmen’s talent.

“It has given me confidence for the rest of the season. Being captain seems to help me with my batting – I feel I have to lead the team with my bat. I’m very excited to play again. I just want to perform at my best and have the team give the best of our ability. I’m not thinking of a double ton (200 runs) yet, I just want to do my best.”
