UPDATE: Crash plane being removed from Illovo Beach [PHOTOS]

Civil aviation authorities will launch an investigation into the causes of the crash.

A digger has righted the two-seater plane which crash-landed on the shore near Elizabeth Drive at Illovo Beach this morning.

Civil aviation authorities will launch an investigation into the causes of the crash, which is believed to have taken place while the two occupants were travelling from Umkomaas to Virginia Airport.

Photos from the scene show a deep rut in the beach sand leading to the site where the plane eventually flipped over onto its roof.

Rescue Care spokesman Garrith Jamieson said: ““It’s unclear what led to the crash but it will be investigated by the relevant authorities. Both occupants of the plane escaped serious injury,” he said
