“Is there any family in Amanzimtoti that has a little time on their hands and would love to spend some time with a granny, maybe take her out for a milkshake or a lunch or just a stroll on beach,” asked founder, Joanne Mocke Herbst.

“I have a granny in my home (74) who is so tearful as she realises she has nobody, nobody comes to visit, nobody takes her out and in her words, nobody cares. I have a really soft spot for her, but she is so lonely. Please I ask, who has a bit of time to make this granny part of your family. My heart breaks seeing her so sad.”

This gran may be one of the extremely lonely residents, but she’s isn’t the only one in need of some good company.

If you wishing to visit The Elder’s Voice homes in and around Amanzimtoti, the addresses are:

  • 50 Burne Road, Athlone Park, which has two homes
  • 53 Prince Road, Athlone Park
  • 59 Gus Brown Road, Warner Beach (the entrance is on Meintjies Road)
  • 8 Lomond Lane, Amanzimtoti
  • The latest home, opening on 1 February is 55 Linscott Road, Athlone Park

“You don’t need an appointment, please go visit them. Take a treat, there are eight to 10 oldies per home, all have a sweet tooth, all would love a visit and a chat,” said Joanne.

Joanne added that this is a community based project so visits from the community would be great. Many of the pensioners are in their twilight years so even their children are heading for pension themselves. “Many of their children are overseas and quite a few have outlived their children. Many have family who just don’t care, but there are some who do, who do care and for various reasons cannot have their parents stay with them,” she added.

The Elder’s Voice receives no external funding and are totally reliant on the community.
“We always need fridge items, fresh fruit and vegetables, long life milk, toiletries and adult diapers,” said Joanne.
