Blaze tears through Warner Beach family’s home

The family and their dog made it out in time, but almost all their belongings were destroyed within minutes.

A FLAT in Merrit Avenue, Warner Beach was devastated by a fire which started in the bedroom but quickly spread throughout the home on Tuesday afternoon, 23 January.

The family and their dog made it out in time, but nearly all their belongings succumbed to the flames within minutes.

The fire began at about 5.45pm in the bedroom of a ground floor flat. The flat above it had its windows blown out and was damaged by smoke but it did not catch fire.

Neighbours heard screams and rushed to the aid of the family. Neighbour Brett Konig wasted no time in organising and filling buckets, attaching hoses from the gardens and facing the fire head-on, despite being bare-chested and footed. Brett van Niekerk (16), who lives in the block, bravely made his way through the first-floor flat with a hose to assist in extinguishing the blaze.

All the unnamed who acted without hesitation are thanked for their efficiency and bravery.

By the time the Amanzimtoti Fire Department arrived, the flames had been extinguished but the thick black, suffocating smoke needed to be extracted and the scene assessed, to ensure the fire would not reignite.

ER24’s Leo Fourie responded but no-one was hospitalised.

The fire department arrived on the scene to ensure the fire would not reignite.
