Well-known Amanzimtoti resident, Errol van Eeden (73) died in Kingsway Hospital on Wednesday, 3 January.

Errol worked for Eskom for 35 years before ‘retiring’ and opening up his own business, South Coast Glass and Aluminium in Warner Beach. He officially retired eight years ago.

He could often be found having a drink with friends at the Bella Vista Hotel or at the rugby club while supporting his son Jason. “My dad would always help those who were down and out,” said Jason. “He had a hard upbringing.”

Errol was born in Cape Town and spent his younger years at an orphanage. He moved to Durban as a young teen and soon after met and married Greta at the Old Fort Chapel. They were married for 46 years and had six children – Bernadette, Lisa, Vanessa, Steven, Jason and Ryan. He was blessed with seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

“I will miss talking to my dad and hearing his advice,” said Jason. “We were never close until I got married eight years ago. I still remember his favourite saying: ‘Nothing comes free in this life – if you want it, you must earn it’.”
