Festive season big bangs spark strain at Amanzimtoti SPCA

Fireworks set off over the festive season were some of the worst the town had ever experienced.

THE Amanzimtoti SPCA has had its hands full this festive season, straining under the pressure of dealing with the many runaways, pets traumatised by frightening bangs and uncollected animals over the holidays.

“We were extremely busy with call-outs,” said manager Tracey Girling. “On New Year’s Eve, Dawn du Plooy and I were out until 3am collecting strays frightened by the fireworks.”

While some dogs have been claimed, there are too many still waiting to be collected from the SPCA kennels.

“We ask everyone who has a missing animal to report it to us or come down to the Amanzimtoti SPCA at 1 Nyati Road, Athlone Park to physically check,” said Tracey. “If anyone has taken in a runaway or stray pet also let us know, so that the animal can be reunited with its rightful owner.”

Fireworks set off over the festive season were some of the worst the town had ever experienced. Bangs that could be confused with gunshots were set off days leading up to the end of the year and the SPCA staff suspect they will continue through the coming weekend.

The choice of the frighteningly loud bangs shows the extreme selfishness and lack of consideration some have in the name of ‘having fun’. Fireworks don’t only affect household pets but the elderly, wild animals and birds too.

While the end of the festive season is in sight, pet owners are cautioned to keep a watchful eye on their pets and take necessary precautions when going on holiday or if fireworks are being set off in their neighbourhood.

Funds raised through the gift wrapping stations held at local malls and centres are still being tallied but the local animal welfare organisation is confident what was raised will provide a much-needed boost into the new year.
