Help make Christmas cake sales a roaring success for Lions club

Christmas cakes are available at any Lions Club in your area.

Amanzimtoti Lions are once again selling Christmas cakes to raise funds for welfare projects in the local community.

Any money received from the public goes back to the community. Lions Christmas Cakes sell for R100.

The Christmas cake story began in 1975 after a Lion member visited Australia and brought back the idea to Lions Multiple District 410. The first cakes for District 410C were baked by Sunblest Bakery and next by Bakers Bakery, and for about 25 years by Albany.

Albany Germiston baked for District 410B, Albany Cape Town for District 410A and part 410D, and Albany Durban baked for District 410C and part 410D. In about 2001 Albany centralised the baking at Germiston.

“Now, for the past three years Retbrands is our baker for Christmas cakes, still using the recipe from Lions,” said District 410C Christmas cake co-ordinator, Lion Kryn Haus.
“The price of a Lions’ Christmas cake in 1975 was R3.50. At one stage District 410C sold in excess of 100,000 cakes. Shoprite sold cakes on our behalf for about 20 years as part of their social conscience.

The main purpose was to raise funds for projects at club, district and multiple district level, such as Operation Bright Sight, Diabetes and so on. Money raised from the public cannot be used for administration purposes.”
