Mountain of litter cleared from Amanzimtoti riverside

Recent storms have caused all sorts of other litter to get stuck in tree branches and in the river.

Great weather, friendly company and lots of fun was being had by all the voluteers who pitched in at the Amanzimtoti River clean-up on Saturday, 9 December.

Members of the public, cyclists from Toti Cycling Club, Amanzimtoti Sports Centre secretary Cathy Colley, Clean Surf Project and Sapphire Coast Tourism (SCT) members all worked hard to collect rubbish along the riverbanks.

“Recent storms and floods have caused plenty of plastic, loads of nappies and all sorts of other litter to get stuck in tree branches and in the river,” said SCT chairman, Romy Wentzel. “It’s shocking to see how much litter gets dumped into the river, with it all making its way to sea slowly but surely.”

The team eagerly cleaned from 8am to 11am with loads of bags filled along the way.
The team thanks the following sponsors: Barry Walker of Toti Cycling Club, Thirsty Whale, Lords and Legends, Funland, KFC and Sapphire Coast Tourism (SCT).

“Six new bins have been allocated to the pathways along Amanzimtoti River and we thank Cllr Andre Beetge for making the necessary arrangements. We urge the public to keep our region clean and not to litter,” said Romy.
