Postponed Amanzimtoti River bank clean-up set for Saturday, 9 December

Due to high water levels after the rain, last Saturday's river clean-up at the Amanzimtoti Sports Club was called off but will take place on Saturday, 9 December.

THE planned clean-up of the Amanzimtoti River and its banks was postponed due to high water levels after the weekend’s rain but it will take place on Saturday, 9 December.

Environmentally-conscious members of the community are reminded to roll up their sleeves and join in the restoration of the once-beautiful banks.

Last Saturday four Amanzimtoti Conservancy members, two Amanzimtoti Sports Centre members and one passerby didn’t receive the news about the clean-up’s postponement and cleared a whopping 200m of the river bank.

Masterminds of the clean-up, the Amanzimtoti Cycling Club working with the Amanzimtoti Sports Centre explained that their aim is to remove as much of the litter from the river and banks as possible, so that it doesn’t end up on the beach in the next big storm. After last Friday’s rain, the river levels were too high and would’ve made it near impossible to remove all the litter.

Bags and bamboo poles with hooks on the end have been organised for Saturday. The public is urged to bring along any other equipment they believe will prove useful in removing lodged litter. Gloves are recommended to be brought along for hygiene purposes.

The clean-up will kick off at 8am and run until about 11am. The litter that has to be cleaned was carried down by the surging river waters during the 10 October storm and other heavy summer rains that have followed since.

“Sapphire Coast Tourism will brand the area on the day, assist with the cleanup as well as sponsor SCT clean-up shirts to those willing to get their hands dirty,” said SCT’s chairman, Romy Wentzel. “Other prizes sponsored by KFC, Funland, Splash/Waterworld, Lords and Legends – to name a few – will also be up for grabs.”

With the day providing the opportunity to win many prizes, as well as a chance to team build, clean the environment and leave a positive mark, the organisers are sure the clean-up will be well supported.
