Four of 49 tons of spilled #nurdles have been salvaged from KZN’s shores

Teams will continue to work along the KZN coastline, actively collecting nurdles.

Just over four of the 49 tons of nurdle pellets that leaked into the ocean during the 10 October storm in Durban harbour, have been retrieved from the province’s coastline.

A container ship in Durban harbour was damaged during the catastrophic storm and billions of little plastic pellets known as nurdles spilled into the ocean.

It is estimated that around 49 tons (representing billions of pellets) of these nurdles are in the ocean, posing a potential environmental disaster.

The following reported efforts were collated for the week of 20 to 30 November: This week, 340.5 bags of nurdles were collected from 15 different locations in KZN including Amatikulu, Dokodweni, Umhlanga, North Beach and Umkomaas.

Teams will continue to work along the KZN coastline, actively collecting nurdles.

These efforts are being made jointly by the east coast Department of Environmental Affairs, Working for Coast, the formal directive-driven Drizit/Resolve Marine Group, SAAMBR, Wild Oceans teams and volunteer response co-ordinated through the KZN Waste Network.

Since 10 October to date, a total of 4.117 tonnes have been collected by all parties combined.
