Amanzimtoti Lions tackle diabetes crisis

AT its centennial convention in Chicago, Lions International unveiled diabetes as a new global signature cause around which it will mobilise its 1.4-million volunteer members in 200 countries.
Diabetes is a major concern and type two diabetes which is mainly caused by the modern diet of sugar sweetened drinks and a high intake of other carbohydrates and also recently blamed on high intake of saturated fats in the diet, is growing at an alarming rate.
People may be unaware of the fact that their blood glucose sugar is high and for this reason, the Lions Club of Amanzimtoti runs free screening at Dischem Galleria on the last Saturday of the month from 9.30am to 11.30am.
Many of the people who have been screened have already been diagnosed with diabetes. While a few have good sugar levels, many are way over a reading of 10 mmol/L which means they either need to change their medication, if they are taking it, or they are not sufficiently controlling their diet.
While they may feel healthy, damage will probably be occurring to their organs, the outcome of which can be serious.
