Nile crocodile found in Illovo Glen stormwater drain

The croc had positioned himself near a stormwater drain about 50m from some houses.

A Nile crocodile had to be removed from an Illovo Glen yard on Monday, 23 October.

Jason Arnold of Universal Reptiles said some construction workers in the area first spotted the 1.3m young croc on an embankment near a natural riverine just below Santo Alberto Road and called him.

“Although I’m based in Durban North and usually deal with removing problematic reptiles there, when I heard it was Nile crocodile I just had to take a drive and see it for myself,” he said.

The croc had positioned himself near a storm water drain about 50m from some houses. When he spotted Jason, he darted into the drain and travelled up the pipe to make his escape.

The croc led Jason on a chase through the stormwater drains.

He led Jason on a merry chase for one-and-a-half to two hours through various yards until he managed to capture him in one of the drains.

As he is not from the area Jason wouldn’t speculate where the croc could have come from, but the recent storm possibly washed him down to the coast.
