South Coast train service disrupted by #DurbanStorm

It is recommended that commuters consider alternative transport if punctuality is critical to their travel.

Last week’s #DurbanStorm has affected Metrorail’s services, causing interruptions in the southern parts of the city.

The train service for KZN was suspended in all areas due to the heavy storm on Tuesday, 10 October.

Due to the severe damage on the following lines, busses will be arranged to transport commuters: South Coast Line: Umkomaas to Kelso; Wests line: Montclair to Island View; Crossmoor line: Merebank to Crossmoor.

On Tuesday, 17 October, about 100m north of the Isipingo train station, a 10-metre section of the rail carriageway was seen hanging precariously in the air, as the sand foundation had washed away.

β€œMetrorail KZN thanks its commuters for their patience and understanding during this difficult period,” said acting HOD of marketing and communications manager, Isabel van der Westhuizen.

β€œMetrorail staff have been working hard trying to clear all the debris from the infrastructure, as well as getting the power restored.

Every endeavour will be made to run the complete service but commuters are requested to expect limited services until further notice.”

The following train services were re-introduced from Monday, 16 October, with a 15 to 20-minute delay expected in all areas: South Coast: Durban to Reunion; Umkomaas to Kelso; Pinetown; KwaMashu; Umlazi; North Coast; New Main Line (Durban to Cato Ridge); and Bridge City.

β€œIt is recommended that commuters consider alternative transport if punctuality is critical to their travel. The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa apologises for the inconvenience and also appeals for patience and understanding during this period,” said Van der Westhuizen.
