A mugger was arrested after he was spotted emerging from some bush in Louis Botha Drive by a Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) foot patrol guard on Monday morning, 9 October.
According to CCPO committee member, George Snodey, the man was carrying a handbag when he came out of the bush with a friend.
He could not provide a reasonable explanation for being in possession of the handbag, so the guard called for back-up and CCPO supervisor, Michael Mkhize arrived and searched him.
He took the pair to Amanzimtoti detectives and with the help of ET Rapid Response’s Tony Lokker, traced the owner of the handbag. She had been robbed at knife-point in the vicinity of Galleria Mall on Sunday, 8 October.
She was contacted and opened a case at Amanzimtoti police station.

Earlier that morning, six vagrants sleeping under the train bridge at Warner Beach station were picked up by the CCPO and taken to the detectives to be profiled to see if they were being sought.
Three of them had previous convictions and two had outstanding warrants of arrest. “Thanks to detective EM Mkhize for the assistance – it’s never too much trouble for this member to assist us,” said Snodey.
