#DurbanStorm returns lost anchor to buoyant owner

The anchor was found tangled in the branches of a dead tree.

TOTI Conservancy’s Angus Pyke related how every dark cloud has a silver lining during the storm on Tuesday, 10 October when his long lost and near-forgotten anchor, which had been firmly embedded at the bottom of the Little Toti River, made its way back to him months after it was submerged underwater.

“More than six months ago a relation borrowed my paddle-ski anchor to haul water lettuce from the Little Toti River,” said Angus.

“She employed the services of an over-zealous car guard who hurled the anchor across the river and into a submerged tree, where it became firmly fixed. I attempted to retrieve it but failed, even after requesting the help of a local ski boat club who tried to use the winch on their powerful tractor to pull out the entire tree.

They couldn’t even find the tree and over several months, the water lettuce multiplied, the reeds grew and my hopes of ever seeing my anchor again dwindled.”

On Tuesday evening after the flood, however, he was buoyed when he went down to the beach and discovered his anchor, all tangled up in the branches of a dead tree.
