Councillor celebrates his birthday with creche

His act of kindness was inspired by the fact that he had grown up in the area and knew the challenges facing the community.

CHRISTMAS came early for the children of an Umgababa creche who were showered with gifts by ward councillor, Bhekumuze Thabethe, who marked his birthday by spending time with children from the local crèche.

For the 151 children from the crèche, 5 September will be remembered as a special day after they were treated to a day full of fun by Thabethe, who is the councillor for ward 98. Thabethe’s unannounced arrival at the crèche brought with it assortment of gifts such as toys, and the children could not contain their excitement. He told the newspaper he had decided to spend his special day with the children instead of family and friends because he felt he needed to make a positive contribution to their lives.

“All of us have a duty to ensure we create better leaders out of our children. Many of them have never celebrated a birthday because they come from poor families and I felt that as a gesture of appreciation to the community which raised me, I needed to do something to make their day and mine special. Nothing warms my heart like being in the company of young children and seeing them in such a state of happiness,’’ he said.

He said this act of kindness was inspired by the fact that he had grown up in the area and knew the challenges facing the community. “One of our responsibilities is to make this a better world so when the time comes for us to hand over the baton to the future generation, we can say we have played our part.

We need to start with small things like brightening the lives of our young children and showing them much needed love because they are the future of our nation. It is the least we can do to make sure that we are a community and a society that values its own people,” he said. He wants to take this campaign throughout ward 98.
