UPDATE: Murder suspects detained until bail application

At this stage bail is opposed and there were no objections from the defense.

The men charged for the brutal murder of former principal, Gona Pillay (63) and attempted murder of her 67-year-old husband made a brief appearance before Magistrate S Meyer in Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 26 September.

An Amanzimtoti intern estate agent Basil Underhill (24) of Umbumbulu, his cousin Braveman Underhill (23) and Fred Boy Msomi (30) were remanded in police custody and will be held in the Chatsworth SAPS holding cells until their next court appearance for a formal bail application on 3 October.

State prosecutor, Thandeka Mgcamu said at this stage bail is opposed. There were no objections from the defense. The trio were charged with house robbery with aggravated circumstances, murder and attempted murder.

Underhill was arrested on Friday, 22 September, while his cousin was arrested on Saturday night.

Msomi and Basil Underhill will be represented by Legal Aid attorneys, while Braveman Underhill, who handed himself over to the Bayview SAPS on Tuesday, was represented by his private attorney, C Dlamini.
