Brody competed in four rounds of trials this year and was chosen as one of four U18 representatives to compete in the Billabong SA Junior Champs from 4 until 8 October.

“We form the U18 team. Usually surfing is an individual sport but this time we will be competing as a team, so it will be fun. I’m stoked to have made it,” said Brody.

The salty young gun and grade 11 Amanzimtoti High pupil has been investing many hours of his time in training, to ensure he’ll be at his best come the contest. Training twice a week in Durban, Brody and his team mates are trained by ex-local surfer and eThekwini Surf Riders Association coach and manager, Mikey Venter as well as well-known board shaper, Spider Murphy. The training includes beach training to heighten fitness levels as well as surf training to polish skill.

“I’m feeling confident about the upcoming contest. I think this is thanks to all the training,” admitted Brody. “I’m looking for a quarter final finish this year, as I am well aware of the competition I’m up against.”

Brody is sponsored by Boarding South Africa and rides G-force boards shaped by Graham Smith, father of renowned surfer Jordy Smith.

“I enjoy competing in surfing. I’ve made friends from all over the world and have been able to travel and see a lot of South Africa, more than I would’ve without my surfing,” said Brody. “It would be sick to make the South African team but if I don’t reach my goals, I’ll never pack in this sport. I love surfing, so I’d become a free surfer if ever competing stopped fulfilling me.”

Brody thanked his sponsor, his team for all the hard work it has invested as well as his board shaper, Graham for always equipping him with great boards.

If anyone can assist with donations towards Brody’s travel costs, contact his mother Caroline on 031-916-3147 or 084-245-9352.
