Transform your bedroom

A bedroom makeover might be all you need to help you get a good night’s rest

A bedroom makeover might be all you need to help you get a good night’s rest. Here are some tips to turn your sleeping quarters into a relaxation sanctuary…

Declutter

There has been a lot of research on the links between a cluttered and chaotic environment and good mental hygiene. If you are trying to find rest in a room that is filled to the brim with items that remind you of the rest of your day-to-day life and the stress you face, it is understandable that you might find it hard to relax.

Good storage can help you to pack away all the items that seem to call to you when you should be unwinding after a stressful day. While it is a short term solution and you would certainly benefit from decluttering on a more permanent basis, for the short term simply getting into a proper routine of regularly packing away everything into its proper place or leaving things like laptops and work papers at work rather than bringing them into your bedroom can help.

In the long term, consider joining some minimalist or zen decorating facebook groups to pick up some tips on how to declutter your whole life.

Bedding

The feel of a freshly made bed is like no other and making sure your bed-linen is regularly laundered and in good condition can make a huge difference to the quality of your sleep. Updating your bedroom decor can sometimes be as simple as changing the linen you use and incorporating new covers and throw pillows in a colour scheme that works better than the one you presently have. It is also one of the most effective, yet least expensive ways to update and refresh any bedroom.

Think about the colour scheme before you invest in new bedding and while you are at it, check the condition of the duvet inners, pillows, and the bed and mattress itself. Updating your bed linen is not going to make up for a broken bed frame, creaking springs which poke you in the back when you sleep, or a sagging mattress.

Changing the sheets regularly is also very important. This is especially important in areas such as KZN in the summer when it is especially humid and bacteria tends to thrive in the moist environment.

Vacuuming mattresses regularly to remove built up dead skin cells, and dust mites is also important.
