Keely to sing in Footloose musical

Local songbird, Keely Crocker has been selected to perform in Footloose The Musical.

LOCAL songbird, Keely Crocker (15) of Kingsway High School will have her voice heard by many after being selected to perform in Footloose The Musical.

The production will be on show at UKZN’s Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from 8 to 17 September.

This musical, directed for the first time by Daisy Spencer in consultation with Themi Venturas, is a Young Performers Production, meaning the cast is comprised of high school pupils backed by professional band, The Reals led by Dawn Shelby. Keely was selected through a three-part audition and has been cast as singing ‘Wendy Jo’ and is a chorus girl.

“The May audition consisted of three parts namely singing, acting and dancing with different judges selecting from each,” she explained. “I love performing. It’s very time-consuming but rewarding,” said Keely. “Rehearsals started in the second term, continued through the school holidays and now take place every weekend. We have been working very hard. I think it’s going to be a great show.”

The singer explained this will be a South African version of Footloose. With its awesome cast, choreographer, producer and director, she assures the production will be a success.

However excited Keely is, this is not her first time being part of a huge production at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. “I was in The Buddy Holly Story last year and I absolutely loved every second of it,” she recalled.

Aside from her time on stage, Keely also excels in both sport and academics.

“Somehow I manage to fit it all in,” admitted Keely. “It requires long hours, late nights, dedication and a passion for the arts. You have to be willing to make a lot of sacrifices.”

She thanked her family, friends and supporters for the constant support and love she’s showered with. Catch Footloose The Musical at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from 8 to 17 September. Buy tickets through Computicket.
